Cobb County

Cobb County is a vibrant residential and commercial community located a mere 10 minutes northwest of Atlanta, just across the mighty Chattahoochee River. Once a small bedroom community, Cobb County today is home to more than 648,000 residents. A suburban megaplex encompassing 340 square miles and six municipalities, the county is divided into regions because of its size. East Cobb is defined as the area east of I-75 and south of Town Center at Cobb. Prosperous and fast-growing, East Cobb remains proud of its historic roots while welcoming modern high-tech companies including IBM and Lockheed

Aeronautical. The communities of East Cobb are affluent and residents are well educated, enjoying a sophisticated infrastructure, a strong diversified economy, numerous recreational and cultural amenities, and excellent public schools. The Cobb County School District is the second largest school system in the state, serving more than 100,000 students. Almost 50 schools within the district have been designated as Schools of Excellence state- or nation-wide. The area’s two public universities -- Kennesaw State University and Southern Polytechnic State University -- are units of the University System of Georgia. East Cobb also maintains more than 40 public parks. Water sports are popular and The Appalachian Trail is just minutes away. Cultural opportunities are numerous, from the free concerts at Piedmont Park to the Georgia Ballet, the Cobb Symphony Orchestra, the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art and Theatre in the Square. All in all, East Cobb provides a diverse and dynamic atmosphere for families and businesses alike.

Much of the land in Cobb County once belonged to the Cherokee Nation. Despite promises by future president Andrew Jackson, the encroaching white population did not stop growing. When the state of Georgia began to build a railroad from the Tennessee River to the Chattahoochee, the county grew even more rapidly. Cobb County was named in honor of Thomas Willis Cobb, U.S. representative, senator and Supreme Court judge. The city of Marietta was named after his wife.

Today, East Cobb has grown into a metropolis in its own right, no longer a bedroom community to Marietta or Atlanta. The Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department operates 42 park sites on more than 2,740 acres. Fishing, golf, tennis, swimming and other recreational pursuits are featured at numerous fine facilities, such as the Cobb County Civic Center, Aquatic Center and Gymnastics Center at Larry Bell Park, the Al Bishop Softball Complex and Lost Mountain Park. Jim R. Miller Park hosts the annual North Georgia State Fair.
